While talking to Fox News host Greta Van Susteren on Wednesday, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump made an announcement about this summer’s convention that sent fear down the spines of the GOP establishment.
According to Western Journalism, Trump promised Van Susteren a “spectacular convention” that will break with political traditions. He also said he wanted to “bring in some entertainment.”
“You hear a lot of speeches and people are falling asleep after the 19th speech,” Trump told the Associated Press. “The concept of some entertainment from a great singer, a great group I think would be something maybe to break things up.”
Trump said he prefers “country and western” music, and revealed that various artists have already expressed interest in performing, even some who can’t because they’re “on the other side of the ledger, it’s a little bit tough.”
This came after an April interview in which Trump called the 2012 Republican Convention “the single most boring convention I’ve ever seen.”
“It’s very important to put some showbiz into a convention, otherwise people are going to fall asleep,” Trump said. “We don’t have the people who know how to put showbiz into a convention.”
Trump’s convention manager Paul Manafort also spoke out this week to promise “an exciting convention.”
“It will be a program where we will be talking to America about not just Donald Trump but the Republican Party,” he said. “We’ll put it in ways that we hope will be entertaining, but more important, informative.”
