The feud between Fox News and Donald Trump heated up this week when the GOP frontrunner announced he would no longer be appearing on tonight’s debate due to the fact that Megyn Kelly has been hired to moderate it.
Last night, Trump appeared on the O’Reilly Factor, and host Bill O’Reilly spent a full 15 minutes begging his old friend to change his mind about appearing on the debate. Unfortunately for O’Reilly, however, Trump wasn’t about to budge.
According to Daily Mail, O’Reilly used every trick in the book, from flattery to nostalgia, to woo Trump back to the network. He began by applauding Trump for his strength, but also warning him that voters “need to see you in high-profile situations” ahead of the Iowa caucuses.
O’Reilly then moved on to talk about how important a debate can be in strengthening a candidate in the eyes of voters. When this approach failed, the Fox host bluntly told The Donald, “You’re making a big mistake.”
Trump was unfazed by O’Reilly’s please, calling Kelly “overrated” and saying that Fox will suffer financially without him on the debate. He also denied that his being “petty,” saying, “I just don’t like being used.”
Trump continued to say that he will definitely not attend the debate, and will instead host an event at Drake University’s Sheslow Auditorium “veteran organizations.” The venue can seat 775 people, and the event will happen simultaneously with the debate at 9pm.
In a final desperate plea, O’Reilly begged, “I bought you so many vanilla milkshakes, you owe me… Will you just reconsider?”
Trump was clearly not amused by this, and he firmly told the host that he’d agreed not to ask him about this on live television.
