Marine Cpl. Alex Martinez spent this past Thanksgiving stationed in Afghanistan, but it was still important to him to celebrate the holiday.

After his six hour Thanksgiving shift, Martinez invited his entire squad back to his barracks for a treat. According to American Overlook, Martinez gave his fellow soldiers a home cooked Thanksgiving meal that DEFINITELY gave them something to be thankful for!

Photos show the soldiers sitting down at a plastic table to a meal of steak, turkey, mashed potatoes and corn bread stuffing.

DELARAM, Afghanistan – Lance Cpl. Salvador Nunez, a squad automatic rifleman serving with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment’s Security Force Assistance Advisor Team, smiles as he eats during his squad’s Thanksgiving dinner here, Nov. 28. Nunez, 21, from Aurora, Ill., was the first Marine to share what he was grateful for on Thanksgiving. Nunez said it was hard being away from his family, but at least he got to spend time with his brothers.

“It’s nice to be able to bring a piece of home to Afghanistan,” said Cpl. Kenton Zerr. “Even though the food wasn’t as good as our families’ cooking, the intent was still the same. We all got together and bonded. I’m going to remember this Thanksgiving for a while.”

DELARAM, Afghanistan – Cpl. Ross McGillivray, a fire team leader serving with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment’s Security Force Assistance Advisor Team, bites into his steak during his squad’s Thanksgiving dinner, Nov. 28. McGillivray is a native of Fort Wayne, Ind.

We’re glad these brave soldiers got to celebrate Thanksgiving with such a great meal!

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - Marines with 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, enjoy a home-cooked meal provided by the volunteers of Steak Team Mission. Steak Team Mission, a privately funded, nonprofit organization from Dallas, served the Marines and sailors of 2nd Marine Division (Forward) steak dinners in seven separate locations within a five-day period.

God bless ALL the men and women serving our country overseas!
