Early Tuesday morning, a Russian fighter plane was shot down by a Turkish jet over Syria’s Turkomen Mountains. Hours later, disturbing footage was released of a group of Syrian rebels celebrating over the dead Russian pilot’s body.
Turkey claims that the plane was shot down after the pilot violated Turkish airspace and ignored nearly a dozen warnings by the army. Putin denies this, saying that the pilot never left Syrian airspace and accusing Turkey of funding ISIS.
According to Daily Mail, the footage shows at least a dozen rebels surrounding the dead pilot and chanting “Allahu Akbar.” Both pilots of the jet ejected from the plane, and another video shows rebels firing at them as they parachuted to the ground.
The dead pilot can be seen covered in burns and bruises.
