A new necklace has just come on the market that is saving the lives of women who are on the dating scene.

With date rapes at an all-time high, Yasmin Mustafa and Anthony Gold teamed up to found a company called ROAR that aims to stop violence against women. According to American Overlook, they have designed a device called Athena that fights off attackers. Named after the Greek goddess of strength, this device, “helps empower women to live their lives boldly, without fear.”

“We developed Athena to help shift the focus from fear to empowerment,” cofounder Mustafa said. “It’s not a safety device; it’s a symbol of internalized confidence.”

To activate Athena, you just hold down the button for 3 seconds to sound the alarm. At that very moment, a loved one will receive a message giving the woman’s location, as well as a 1-click call to 911.

“The stats are horrifying, and violence against women has been declared an epidemic. Sexual assaults, harassment, and inequality aren’t ‘women’s issues.’ They’re societal issues. And as a society, we need to ask ourselves, ‘Is this the best we can do?’” Mustafa said. “When it came time to select the name… Athena was a no-brainer.” After all, she said, Athena was “the Greek goddess of courage, wisdom, and strength.”

“We would recommend Athena to girls from middle school up — anyone in an urban environment, a college campus, those who work late at night, travel a lot, and/or feel unsafe walking at night,” she continued. “Women should not need to alter their lifestyle, modify their behavior, or carry self-defense devices to protect themselves. And our goal is to help create a society where that is a reality.”

Athena is about the size of a quarter, so it’s small and easy to use!
