Obama’s Department of Justice has already announced plans to release nearly 6,000 federal prisoners who were convicted of “nonviolent” drug crimes. Now, Republican lawmakers want the country to know that 2,000 of the prisoners scheduled for release are illegal aliens who were set to be deported.
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) dropped this bombshell in a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Department of Homeland Security Sec. Jeh Johnson that was released on Thursday.
“As you are no doubt aware, recent tragedies have raised widespread concerns regarding the handling of criminal alien cases,” the senators wrote, according to Breitbart. “For example, Apolinar Altamirano has been charged with murdering Grant Ronnebeck, a convenience store clerk in Mesa Arizona, after the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began removal proceedings but allowed Altamirano to post $10,000 bond.”
The three senators went on to press for more information about the upcoming releases, demanding assurances that the government would still deport these illegals and would hold them in custody until then.
“We are in support of reforming federal sentencing policies and hope that Congress will turn its attention to the issue soon, but we must do so in a responsible manner that does not compromise public safety,” they concluded.
