The Google-owned firm Boston Dynamics has just debuted their humanoid robot known as the Atlas robot, and it’s terrifying.
According to Daily Mail, the formidable robot is 6ft 2in tall and weighs in at 330Ibs. In the video the firm released, the robot is shown running down a forest path without falling once.
Boston Dynamics describes the Atlas robot as a “high mobility, humanoid robot designed to negotiate outdoor, rough terrain.”
“Atlas can walk bipedally leaving the upper limbs free to lift, carry, and manipulate the environment,” they continued. “In extremely challenging terrain, Atlas is strong and coordinated enough to climb using hands and feet, to pick its way through congested spaces.”
Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert told the press that the forest trials of the robot had gone very well.
“We’re interested in getting this robot out in the world, its a totally different, you can’t predict what its going to be like,” Raibert said. “All kinds of stuff happens, and we’re making pretty good progress in making it’s movement sort of within shooting range of yours, and if we keep pushing we’ll get there.”
The firm hopes that one day, the Atlas robot will be even more agile than humans.
While this is certainly very cool, it’s also a terrifying sign that we are one step closer to robots becoming more powerful than humans. We’re all for technology, but we definitely do not want to give robots the chance to take over our planet…
