A University of Michigan professor has been arrested after he travelled 1,300 miles to meet a father and his 14 year-old son who he met online for sex.
James Cavalcoli, 51, was an assistant professor at the university’s department of computational medicine and bioinformatics before his arrest. Cavalcoli, who calls himself a “boy lover,” began chatting with the father, “Jim,” on a child porn website.
The professor arranged to meet Jim and his 14 year-old son for sex in Florida, and he set off to drive there from Ann Arbor armed with lubrication and condoms. Unfortunately for Cavalcoli, after he made the 1,350 mile drive, he found that “Jim” was actually an undercover agent with the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force.
According to Daily Mail, Cavalcoli immediately confessed and told police he “regretted” his trip. He was booked into Broward County Jail and will later be transported to a federal court in Fort Lauderdale. He is facing federal charges of traveling across state lines for sex with a minor.
The college professor first began talking to Jim in November of 2013 on a website that allows users to discuss fetishes for young boys. There, Cavalcoli sent sexually explicit messages to Jim and eventually arranged a meeting with him. When he arrived at the Florida spa they arranged to meet at, he was instead met by the FBI.
Cavalcoli had worked for University of Michigan for 13 years before his arrest. The school’s website described him as an “enthusiastic teacher” who has “broad experience” in computational medicine and bioinformatics.
“Mr Cavalcoli has worked for the University for about 13 years,” a spokeswoman for the University of Michigan Health System told the press this week. “We are currently reviewing the matter and will cooperate fully with law enforcement investigators.”
