Former Taliban captive Bowe Bergdahl is in hot water this week after he found himself caught in a drug raid while visiting friends in California.
According to Daily Mail, the 29 year-old was at a Redwood Valley ranch when authorities stormed the property and made multiple arrests as they seized 181 marijuana plants. Though Bergdahl is said to have had no connection to the drug operation, military officials were still informed and an army escort was sent to pick him up.
Despite acknowledging that Bergdahl is likely a traitor to his country, Sheriff Tom Allman praised him for being polite to his officers.
“I’m not sticking up for the guy at all, but I will say this, he was very polite,” Allman said. “He was not resistant at all. He shook everybody’s hand. He thanked us all.”
Bergdahl is currently on authorized leave from active duty as he awaits a court-martial, and he had been given permission to visit the Northern California residence. He arrived at the ranch last Friday and was due to head back east this past Wednesday. Bergdahl was never taken into police custody and he has now been returned to his military base in Washington D.C.
Bergdahl was AWOL when he was captured by the Taliban in 2009. Five years later, he was exchanged for five senior terrorist militants in a controversial move by Obama.
He is set to face court-martial in September.
