Just weeks after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, liberals have moved on to a new cause: transgender rights. Now, they are targeting the US military in an attempt to get them to drop their ban on transgenders serving.
Sergeant Shane Ortega, an openly transgender man in the military, has found himself at the center of this cause. Born a woman, Ortega now lives life as a man, but he is forced to wear a female uniform and be addressed as a female officer in the military.
The 28 year-old’s love for body-building means that only the largest female uniform will fit him. On Monday, Ortega and his supporters got some very good news when Obama’s Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced that the Pentagon is in the final stages of lifting the bans placed on transgenders in the military.
“We must ensure that everyone who’s able and willing to serve has the full and equal opportunity to do so,” Carter said in a statement, according to Daily Mail. “And we must treat all of our people with the dignity and respect they deserve. Going forward the Department of Defense must and will continue to improve how we do both.”
“I’m pumped up,” Ortega said. “At the same time I know this is a small step forward and there’s much more to do.”
Ortega went on to say that he knows of a transgender woman in the military who is too afraid to come out because she serves in an all-male unit.
“It’s a human rights, health care issue,” Ortega said. “I talk to her three or four times a month.”
