Six hecklers were arrested at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas on Sunday after they disrupted his service with angry screams.
Sportswriter Anwar Richardson, who was visiting the church, said that all was going well until Osteen got up to give his sermon.
“And the moment he started to preach, somebody gets up and they yell, ‘Joel Osteen you’re a liar,’” Richardson recounted, according to The Blaze, adding that given the recent events in Charleston, his family was frightened. After the initial yelling, more people kept angrily standing up as the service went on.
“After the sixth time that it occurred, my son was sleeping in my lap, and I looked at my wife and she was nervous and we just decided we have to get out of here,” Richardson said. “All I could think of is you don’t know what’s going on, and I just can’t wait to find out, so I gotta get out of there.”
It was later revealed that all six of the hecklers were from The Church of Wells, which is a rival church of Lakewood. They have each since been charged with criminal trespass. Despite the disruption, Osteen did not let it ruin the overall service.
“Thank you all for your patience and we’ll just continue to receive what God has for us,” Osteen said amidst the chaos. “It’s a good day to be alive.”
