Ramadan is the holiest time of the Muslim year, and during the holiday Muslims fast sunrise to sunset every day.
Now that the U.K. has a large Muslim population, Ramadan is celebrated just as much as Christmas is in some parts of the country. Because of this, the British supermarket chain Tesco put up some displays to encourage Muslims to buy food on Ramadan this year. According to Conservative Tribune, an employee at one of the stores decided to sneak a little joke into one of the displays, and Muslims all over the world are outraged about it.
That’s right, somebody put Smokey Bacon Pringles on a display for Ramadan! This is of course hilarious, because Muslims cannot eat bacon since it is a pork product.
The image was posted online, and it quickly earned quite a lot of backlash from the Muslim community. Muslims everywhere slammed the photo and Tesco as “racist,” and demanded an apology. Finally, Tesco had no choice but to comply, calling the incident an unfortunate “gaffe.”
“We are proud to offer a wide range of meals and products to meet the needs of our customers during Ramadan,” they said in a statement. “We recognize these Pringles weren’t in the most suitable place and our store colleagues have now moved them.”
Perhaps most ironic of all is that Smokey Bacon Pringles ARE actually halal! They’re vegan, with the bacon flavoring being provided by monosodium glutamate, disodium guanylate and disodium inosinate. There is no pork in these Pringles at all, so Muslims can actually munch on this tasty treat.
This little fact doesn’t seem to matter to most Muslims, however. They seem to just be happy that now they have something else to be angry about, and another business to attack!
