A respected police officer in Boynton Beach has been arrested for allegedly raping a 20 year-old girl on the hood of his police car.
Officer Stephen Maiorino, 35, has been charged with armed sexual battery, armed kidnapping and unlawful compensation or reward for official behavior, and he has also been suspended without pay from his department.
The incident occurred last October, when the young woman found herself stranded in the city after her friend was arrested on DUI charges. Maiorino offered to drive her to the police station where she could wait to be picked up. She accepted the ride, but when they arrived at the station and she tried to get out, Maiorino grabbed her wrist and told her she would be arrested if she did not immediately perform oral sex on him.
Terrified, she agreed, and Maiorino drove 20 blocks north of the department to an abandoned field. There, he had the girl strip before he raped her on the hood of his police car. A used condum as well as other evidence has since been found at the scene.
The girl says she was held face down during the attack, and that at one point she looked back to see the officer holding a gun in his left hand. Afterwards, he told her to get dressed and warned her that he would kill her family if she ever told. However, she went right to the police, and Maiorino was promptly arrested.
“The very prospect that a law enforcement officer, someone whom the public should hold in the highest regard because of the manner in which we safeguard the public welfare, could possibly exploit this trust in such a vile and inexcusable way,” said Boynton Beach Police Chief Jeffrey Katz.
Though Maiorino has been celebrated by his fellow officers as a “good cop,” he has actually been disciplined 10 times, often for going missing while “transporting” individuals.
Maiorino is currently in jail awaiting trial. What do you think his punishment should be? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
