An Oregon woman has been found guilty of murdering two of her handymen, but it’s what she did with their bodies that has everyone talking.
Susan Monica, 66, murdered the two men over the course of two years. She then fed their bodies to her farm animals in an unprecedented move of brutality.
“You shot two people and fed them to your pigs,” Circuit Judge Tim Barnack told Monica when he sentenced her to the minimum of 50 years in prison.
“I don’t know how else I can put it. You valued pigs more than you value people,” he added. “It may sound harsh, but you are a cold-blooded killer.”
According to the New York Daily News, Monica killed Stephen Delicino, 59, in 2012 and then Robert Haney, 56, in 2013. Her changing stories about the crimes is what did her in. At first, she claimed that Delicino shot himself repeatedly in the head, but then she changed her story, saying that she shot him in self-defense.
As for Harvey, she claimed he disappeared in the summer of 2013. Monica said she came upon him a month later and found him being disemboweled by her pigs, and that she shot him to put him out of his misery.
However, forensic evidence did not support either of these stories. It showed that Delicino had been shot three times in the head, and that Harvey’s leg had been hacked off with an ax. Monica’s behavior in prison also raised suspicions. Earlier this week, a fellow inmate testified that Monica had signed a birthday card in jail by saying, “from the sweetest murderer in Jackson County.”
“I got chills from the birthday card,” 23-year-old inmate Jordan “Janae” Farris testified.
The elderly woman asked to be sentenced as soon as the jury convicted her, saying “it doesn’t seem to matter.”
