Another American police officer is in trouble this week after dashcam footage showed him running over a suspect.
The video shows Officer Michael Rapiejko driving his car right at suspect Mario Valencia before running him over. Valencia was suspected of many robberies, including one on the day he was hit in which he allegedly stole a rifle from a local Walmart. He is also suspected of setting fire to a church.
Earlier in the day he stole a car, but he quickly abandoned it. When he was confronted by police, he put a gun to his own head threatening to kill himself before running away with the weapon.
After he was hit, Valencia was sent to the hospital, and now his attorney is accusing the police of using “excessive force.” The police, however, are standing by Rapiejko.
“If we’re going to choose between maybe we’ll let him go a little bit farther and see what happens, or we’re going to take him out now and eliminate any opportunity he has to hurt somebody, you’re going to err on the side of, in favor of the innocent people,” Police Chief Terry Rozema said. “Without a doubt.”
