An Emmy-Winning talk show host is in hot water this week after he compared Michelle Obama to a character from the hit film Planet of the Apes on live TV.

Rodner Figueroa made the remarks during a Wednesday segment of Univision’s entertainment show El Gordo Y La Flaca. He was talking about the work of makeup artist Paolo Ballesteros, who used makeup to turn himself into a Michelle Obama lookalike.

“You know that Michelle Obama looks like she’s part of the cast of Planet Of The Apes, the film,” the Venezuelan-born Figueroa said, according to Daily Mail.

Virtually all of the characters in Planet of the Apes are monkeys.

Figueroa’s cohost desperately tried to cover for him by saying that Michelle Obama is very attractive, but the damage was already done. The backlash was swift, and it didn’t take long for Univision to react. By Wednesday night, the network confirmed that Figueroa had been fired.

“Yesterday during the entertainment show El Gordo y La Flaca, Rodner Figueroa made comments about First Lady Michelle Obama that were completely reprehensible and in no way reflect the values or opinions of Univision. As a result, Mr. Figueroa was fired immediately,” read a statement from Univision.

Figueroa won a Daytime Emmy last June for Outstanding Daytime Talent in Spanish. He has yet to comment on this incident.
