According to Guns.com, an unholy alliance between the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has formed to infringe upon the 2nd Amendment rights of U.S. Citizens. In a rare stance taken for a conservative cause, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has uncovered suspicious activity linking government activity at gun shows and the Fast and Furious scandal.
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests from the ACLU have caused the government to produce e-mails that seem to confirm suspicions of gun show attendees. Federal authorities are attempting to create a database by utilizing automated license plate readers (LPRs) to make record of those who attend gun shows.
Locations, dates, and times mentioned in the redacted documents seem to indicate this DEA/ATF operation was occuring simultaneously with Fast and Furious “gunwalking” into Mexico. Of course, the Obama Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) is denying all associated allegations. Officially, it appears the acquired communications are referencing proposals and not actual operations. That does not, however, mean that similar actions were not taken.
The fact is, more than 100 LPRs have been deployed and a database now holds over 340million images that can be accessed by authorities. A statement from the ACLU expresses the group’s concern:
“Automatic license plate readers must not be used to collect information on lawful activity — whether it be peacefully assembling for lawful purposes, or driving on the nation’s highways,” the group stated in its report. “Without strong regulations and greater transparency, this new technology will only increase the threat of illegitimate government surveillance.”
No matter what the federal government is actually doing, the mere fact that they would develop this database and entertain the idea of a federal listing of gun owners is distressing. The right to bear arms shall not be infringed…especially not by those who are sworn to uphold and defend it.
