Since Rosie O’Donnell and Whoopi Goldberg took over the daytime talk show The View from Barbara Walters earlier this year, the show has seen a steady decline in ratings, and ABC has finally had enough.
The network is reportedly strongly considering ending the show, which is in it’s 18th season, after this year and replacing it with an extra hour of Good Morning America.
“The brass at ABC feels like they’ve tried to do everything possible to breathe new life into this show,’ said an ABC insider.
Despite the numerous changes they have made, nothing has worked, and the source says, “They’re ready to abandon ship at this point.”
“ABC feels it’s exhausted their options with The View and now it’s time to expand the existing franchise, GMA. They feel that since GMA is already beating NBC’s Today during the first two hours of the broadcast, why not extend the morning broadcast,” the insider added.
Rosie’s $4 million contract ends this year, so it is in her best interest for the show to return so she can sign another one. Whoopi’s $5 million contract, however, does not expire until next year, and a clause in it states that Whoopi will be paid whether or not the show continue.
“Whoopi is the winner either way. She’s wanted out of this contract for years and begged to be let go during the show overhaul last summer. To get paid to just go home would make her very happy,” the source said.
