BREAKING : Boehner Wins Re-Election as Speaker

January 6, 2015 12:35pm PST

In a crushing blow for conservatives everywhere, the spineless John Boehner has been re-elected as Speaker of the House for a third term, despite a vigorous attempt to unseat him. 25 Republicans voted against Boehner- in case you’re keeping track, more the twice the number of GOP members who voted against Boehner two years ago, and the most anyone alive has ever seen.

The votes against Boehner were hoping at least to deny a a majority and force a second round of voting. The first round, cane up short, and Boehner’s final vote count was elected 216-164 over the D’s top choice, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Alternates Louie Gohmert, Daniel Webster, and Ted Yoho offered themselves up but only received these 17 votes combined in the final tally. Webster, with 12 votes, Gohmert won 3 votes and Yoho won 2.

If all 435 members were present, 29 Republicans would have had to vote against Boehner to deny him a majority of 218 to force a second round of voting. The absence of several members due to absences for the funeral of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, and also snow delayed flights to D.C. That meant Boehner only needed to barely clear 200 votes to win re-election as speaker.

What a tragedy for the Republican party.
