Even though President Obama saw the fallout from his premature withdrawal in Iraq, with the disaster that is ISIS/ISIL, and the poor civilians living in these terror zones, you would think that perhaps there was a lesson learned here. Not so, as he has placed himself right back in the same situation, different location- Afghanistan.
U.S. Troops in Afghanistan will be cut in half by the end of 2015. There is a paltry 10,000 troops today, and U.S. Combat operations ended last week.
As the U.S. presence falls, the Taliban “will fill every gap that we leave on the battlefield,” Bolger told Blackwell. And why shouldn’t it? The Taliban is seizing on our weaknesses. They see and exposed side, and there they will jab the spear.
Obama may consider the American mission in Afghanistan accomplished, but “nobody’s clued the Taliban into this,” Bolger said.
“They’re in effective control of large parts of eastern and southern Afghanistan today, so I don’t know about that draw-down,” said the general and author of “Why We Lost: A General’s Inside Account of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.”
“To me it seems ill-considered, and I hope that our administration or our military will rethink it in light of what’s happened in Iraq,” he added. “We should’ve learned a lesson as to what happens if you pull out the bulk of your forces: The enemy will fill that gap.”
