Ismaaiyl Brinsley, the 28-year-old gunman who murdered two NYPD officers before taking his own life, had quite a controversial past. Authorities said on Sunday that he had a long criminal record, a hatred for police and the government and an apparent history of mental instability that included an attempt to hang himself a year ago.
Brinsley traveled frequently between the South and New York. He had fathered a child in Brooklyn, where he had been earlier in the week before his violent rampage. He had 19 arrests in Georgia and Ohio and spent two years in prison for gun possession.

Police said Brinsley’s childhood was so troubled that even his own mother was afraid of him. She believes he had undiagnosed mental problems and may have been on medication at some point.
Brinsley was committing felonies up until the very end. Shortly before murdering officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, he shot his on-again, off-again girlfriend in the stomach in her apartment. She is expected to recover.
