A few months ago, the nation was stunned by the disturbing story of an Alabama family who was running a sex ring of incest. Now, the first member of this perverted family is going on trial, and new details about the case are being revealed.
Wendy Wood Holland, 35, has pleaded not guilty to sodomy, sexual abuse, sexual torture and endangering the welfare of a child. She is accused of helping to run the ring, which used the children in the family for sex with other family members and non-family members as well.
Wendy is the aunt of Brittney Wood, 19, whose disappearance in 2012 first tipped authorities off to the family. The teen was believed to have been with Wendy’s husband Donnie Holland, the night she disappeared. Days after Brittney vanished, Donnie committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
Brittney is now believed to have been one of the children who her family passed around for sex.
Wendy made a last minute effort to get her case thrown out of court by claiming that the charges against her were too vague, but Judge Jody Bishop wasn’t having any of it. She refused to dismiss the case, so Wendy is scheduled to still go on trial as planned.
In total, seven Wood relatives and three family friends have been arrested since Brittney’s disappearance. These relatives include Chelsie Wood, who is Wendy’s sister and Brittney’s mother. Police believe that Donnie Holland was the leader of the ring, but that the other adults in the family molested children as well.
Prosecutor Teresa Heinz has lamented the loss of Brittney, who is presumed dead. If she were alive, she could play a crucial role in getting her family behind bars.
“Brittney could have been huge,” said Heinz. “She could have corroborated so many things.”
Even without Brittney’s testimony, things aren’t looking good for the Wood family. Two of Brittney’s uncles and her older brother have already plead guilty to sex charges.
Some family members have denied their role in the ring, including Brittney’s mother Chelsie, who is awaiting trial for having sex with a young female relative.
“There are innocent people in this and there are guilty people in this,” Wood, 39, said in an interview. “I don’t know how the judicial system is going to figure it all out because they’re not the sharpest tools in the shed.”
“The No. 1 thing here is to find Brittney. The No. 2 thing is to get all these sick (people) off the streets,” she added.
