Ernest Righetti High School was placed on lockdown for the second time this year after a lunchtime fight broke out between six students and a responding officer.
On Wednesday, a lunchtime fight at a Central California high school culminated in the arrest of the six students involved. Police swarmed the campus and shut the school down, however, Ernest Righetti High School students are reporting that the initial altercation was relatively minor. It was only after an officer intervened that things turned ugly.
Footage of the incident shows a police officer punching a female student in the face, causing her to fall to the ground.
17-year-old Chloe Williamson told the Santa Maria Times, “The cops made it a lot more than it had to be, pretty much. She was resisting, but he did not have to go punch her in the face. They could have tried other things before.” Apparently, in his attempt to break up a fight between the two female students, the officer hit one woman before dragging her off. “In the process of defending himself, he shoved the females away and one of the suspects was knocked to the ground,” said a statement from the sheriff’s office.
A swarm of students became involved in the altercation, throwing food. An officer is seen with cheese sauce smeared across his back as he pins a student to the ground.
This enraged student witnesses, who reacted by swarming the officer and throwing food. More officers subsequently responded to the scene, some sporting bullet proof vests, and a sheriff’s helicopter circled overhead.
