Jay Leno has cancelled an appearance at a pro-gun event in Newtown, Connecticut after angry liberals made a huge stink about it.

The former Tonight Show host was hired to host a fancy dinner for the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The dinner was billed as the “highlight” of the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas on January 20.

“Jay was asked to do what was positioned as a sportsman show, and when he found out it was a pro-gun lobby show, he canceled,” Leno’s spokesman Bruce Bobbins told the press in a clear attempt to backtrack from the scandal.

The backlash against Leno for taking the job was led by Erica Lafferty, whose mother, Dawn Hochsprung, was killed in the Sandy Hook massacre. Lafferty called Leno’s decision to host the event “out of touch.”

“Like, really, Jay?” Lafferty told reporters. “You said you support background checks, but then you’re emceeing for the gun lobby that fought against them?”

“That doesn’t add up,” she added, “and no one, especially not those of us who have had our families torn apart by gun violence, are laughing.”

With Lafferty at the helm, the other anti-gun liberals followed suit, but most groups changed their tune once Leno announced he would not appear at the event.

“Moms applaud Jay Leno’s decision to cancel his National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) event appearance after hearing directly from Moms and other gun violence prevention supporters on social media,” Moms Demand Action said in a statement.
