Angelique Simpson-Marcus, the black principal of Largo High School, probably should have kept her big mouth shut. Instead, she exposed herself as a virulent racist, calling teacher Jon Everhart “poor white trash” and “white bitch.” It may sound like the set-up for a racially-charged joke, but I assure you, this actually happened.
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 “prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.” Usually it is employed by minorities, but in this case, Everhart’s lawyer used the legislation to try her client’s racial discrimination case in court.
Before Simpson-Marcus became principal, she told Everhart that he would be the first one she would fire. Until she received the appointment, Everhart had extremely high evaluations and even won the “Teacher of the Year” award. He was also extremely popular among his students. After Simpson-Marcus took over his ratings were all bad. Simpson-Marcus fired any teacher who tried to defend Everhart. Everhart himself was fired.
Though the principal, pictured above, denied her racist motivations up and down, a jury saw right through her act. Everhart was awarded $350,000 in compensatory damages, but that’s not all. He may also get back pay and benefits for the time that he was fired. Federal law entitles those who are improperly fired to twice their lost salary. Everhart could be looking at a $2 million payout before all is said and done.
