Feminists everywhere are up in arms after Taylor Swift spoke out about her fellow female icons.
When a reporter asked her why she doesn’t strip down in her music videos like her female peers, Taylor admitted that she has no female role models in the music industry.
“We’re taught to find examples for the way we want our lives to wind up. But I can’t find anyone, really, who’s had the same career trajectory as mine,” Taylor said.
“I just struggle to find a woman in music who hasn’t been completely picked apart by the media, or scrutinized and criticized for aging, or criticized for fighting aging—it just seems to be much more difficult to be a woman in music and to grow older,” the country singer added.
Taylor went on to seemingly condone her hyper-sexualized fellow singers, like Madonna.
“I’m sure there will be things that my grandkids make fun of me for no matter what, but I’d really rather it be, ‘Look how awkward your dancing was in the Shake It Off video! You look so weird, Grandma!’ rather than ‘Grandma, is that your nipple?'”
Madonna recently performed in a see-through bra that showed off her nipples to the world.
Feminists have taken offense with Taylor’s comments, saying that she is blasting her fellow women. However, in a world where Nicki Minaj’s degradingly sexual music videos rule pop culture, we’re glad to see that this young artist is keeping a good head on her shoulders.
