Public Schools Now Not Allowed to Discipline ‘Black or Brown’ Students

Research has revealed that more black and Hispanic students get suspended from school than white students. This is due to the fact that black and Hispanic youths are far more likely to come from broken homes, where they are being raised by a single parent and are not nurtured the way a child needs to be. As a result of a tumultuous upbringing, minority children act out to a greater extent than caucasian children do, and consequently get suspended from school more frequently.
The progressive left has come up with a brilliant way to fix this racial disparity: stop suspending black and Hispanic students, but suspend as many white students as possible. This will magically fix all of the behavioral issues that lead to teen pregnancies, high school dropouts and jail time, right?? Negative.
Your hard-earned tax dollars have funded an investigation, led by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, into the factors which contribute to the high number of minority students who are suspended from school. As a result of the study, Minneapolis public schools are implementing a new policy which aims to close the gap between the amount of white students who are suspended versus the number of minority students who meet the same fate.
Starting Monday, white students will be suspended as normal. However, when a black or brown student faces such disciplinary action, their case will be reviewed personally by the Minneapolis Schools Superintendent’s office. “I and all of my staff will start to review all non-violent suspensions of students of color, especially black boys, to understand why they’re being suspended so we can help intervene with teachers, student leaders and help give them the targeted support they need for these students,” Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson told NPR.
The idiocy of this new policy is astounding. If Johnson really wants to understand why her students are being suspended, she need look no further than their behavioral records. You punch a kid on the playground, you get suspended. You cuss at your teacher, you get suspended. It has nothing to do with the color of the child’s skin. It’s not as if teachers are walking into their classrooms and systematically sending every minority child to the principal’s office solely because of their race.
But Johnson and the rest of liberal academia are not really interested in equality. By catering to minority students, these educators are enabling their behavior, which will only serve to reinforce their bad habits. This will compound the adverse affects of such behavior, making the consequences even greater. Minority students will stop seeing real life repercussions until they turn 18 one day they are thrown in jail for doing the same things they have done throughout their school days.
One blatantly obvious fact which contributes to a higher number of minority suspensions, is the fact that there are far less white students in Minneapolis public schools than there are black and brown students. The Daily Caller reported that the ethnic make-up of Minneapolis schools is majority minority. According to data for the 2014-2015 school year, 33.8 percent of students are white, while 37.2 percent are black, 19.3 percent are Hispanic, and 3.8 percent are Native American. Asians represent 6.8 percent of the student body but were not mentioned by Superintendent Johnson as being impacted by this new policy.
Clearly, with “minority” students making up almost two-thirds of the student body, it makes sense that they are suspended more often than white students. But logic plays no part when it comes to the liberal agenda. “Moving forward, every suspension of a black or brown student will be reviewed by the superintendent’s leadership team,” stated Johnson’s office. “The school district aims to more deeply understand the circumstances of suspensions with the goal of providing greater supports to the school, student or family in need. This team could choose to bring in additional resources for the student, family and school.”
If “additional resources” were being generously given to only white students, the left would have a field day. This new policy will help absolutely no one. It will suck up desperately needed resources while accomplishing nothing but to further racism in America.
