Newly released court documents have revealed that Robin Williams was suffering from a devastating form of dementia at the time of his death that likely contributed to his suicide.
Williams suffered from Lewy bodies dementia, which often results in hallucinations and delusions. This form of dementia makes it difficult for sufferers to identify family and friends as well as causes problems with attention and alertness.
“The condition itself is caused by the build-up of protein into clumps, called Lewy bodies, in the brain, which can damage nerve cells in areas involved in memory and thinking,” said Hilary Evans, Director of External Affairs at Alzheimer’s Research UK.
“These protein clumps also play a role in Parkinson’s disease, so some people with dementia with Lewy bodies will also experience movement symptoms similar to those seen in Parkinson’s,” she added.
Williams’ death was officially ruled a suicide on Friday. This new information gives us more insight into the tortured mind of the legendary actor who brought joy to millions of people.
