Pope Francis is under fire this week after he made controversial comments about evolution, the Big Bang theory, and God himself.
While speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope said that evolution and the Big Bang theory are real, and that God is not “a magician with a magic wand.”
These statements directly contradict creationism, which had been a staple of the catholic church for thousands of years.
The following is an excerpt from the Pope’s speech:
“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so.
He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment.
The Big Bang, which today we hold to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the intervention of the divine creator but, rather, requires it.
Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”
The Catholic Church has long had a reputation of being “anti-science,” but Pope Francis has been trying to be a more progressive pope, and scientists have taken note.
“The pope’s statement is significant. We are the direct descendents from the Big Bang that created the universe. Evolution came from creation,” said Professor Giovanni Bignami of Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics.
While some are rejoicing at the Pope’s statements, other Christians feel betrayed as the Pope continues to betray the church in favor of modern, mainstream ideas. Just weeks ago he came out in support of gay marriage, now he is contradicting the book of Genesis. God only knows what he’ll say next…
