Good News For Officer Wilson As Race Riots Ramp Up In Ferguson

Leaked reports of Grand Jury testimony in Ferguson, Missouri appear to be good news for Darren Wilson, the white police officer who fatally shot Michael Brown. Though Michael Brown is often portrayed as a “kid”, he was 18 and had a criminal record. He was also 6’4″ and nearly 300 pounds. Officer Wilson’s claim that he feared for his life when Brown argued and “tussled” with him is understandable as he was in a vehicle when the altercation began and significantly smaller than Brown, who was also under the influence of marijuana.

Notoriously unreliable eye witness testimony has varied widely concerning the details of this case. Apparently, however, even amid continued rioting and calls by Al Sharpton for Wilson’s conviction, members of the grand jury do not feel there is sufficient evidence to proceed with criminal charges. Federal indictments for civil rights violations require significant and specific evidence of intent. It appears the government has failed to meet that burden. It remains to be seen if charges of murder or man slaughter will go forward.

Vigils, riots, and incessant calls for justice have surrounded this case because it was determined that Brown was unarmed and black while Officer Wilson is guilty of being white. If Officer Wilson acted inappropriately or with malice, he should be punished. If he did not, race baitors, rioters, and looters should go home.

Dr. King asked Americans not to judge each other by the color of our skin. Do any of the people who claim to be carrying on his legacy remember that? Let justice take its course, let law suits be filed if necessary, and let the people of Ferguson mourn the loss of a young man, guilty or not, so that healing can begin. Continuing violence does nothing but create further racial divides.
