You may have been shocked to hear that 32-year-old Lauren Harrington-Cooper had sexual relations with four of her high school students, telling one “all the candy you need is right here.” However, even more surprising is the fact that the English teacher’s husband is standing by her as she sits in jail for the next 9 to 23 months.
Harrington-Cooper’s defense attorney, Joe D’Andrea, believes that his client suffers from an “acute lack of self-esteem.” He explained:
“She has been diagnosed with some significant psychological issues of inadequacy. You would think that she’s a pretty, young girl, that she would feel good about herself. But her self-esteem issues have really troubled her all of her life, and she found comfort and solace in some people giving her attention, as wrong as it was.”
Apparently, the naughty teacher’s husband believes this little song and dance. When the couple opened a dance studio as a side business, their relationship turned into a day-to-day exchange of business with very little romance. Seemingly blaming himself for his wife’s feelings of inadequacy, 32-year-old Raphael Cooper remarked:
“It was falling apart. It was coming apart. I wasn’t realizing it, possibly. She was obviously not feeling loved … I don’t want anybody else. I don’t want to go anywhere else. I’ve had too many years built up with her, and too many good memories and too many ahead.”
The former Wyoming Valley West High School teacher told ABC News:
“I’m glad I got caught. I went against what I know is right, and I did wrong. And there is no way to explain that away. I have no defense of myself. I was wrong, plain and simple … It wasn’t so much that I even needed a physical connection. It was just being able to interact with someone who made me feel valued and worthwhile … There are days that I hate myself, but I’m learning to forgive myself. I’m learning to forgive others. I did do wrong, but I’m not a monster. I am human, and like every other human, I made mistakes.”
As for her husband’s undying support, she said, “There are no words for it. I mean, he’s absolutely remarkable. I wish we never got away from the marriage part of our relationship.”
Harrington-Cooper was arrested on Dec. 19, 2013 and is currently residing in Luzerne County Correctional Facility. She must register as a sex offender for the next 25 years and will never be permitted to teach again. Tell us how you feel about her husband’s choice to stand by her side in the comments section!
