Dana Parris’s North Carolina diner “Just Cookin” had been struggling for years in a rough economy, so she decided to take drastic action to save her business.
“Sometimes you just have to give control back to God,” she later said, and that’s exactly what she did! Parris then took a huge risk by allowing her customers to decide how much they pay for their meals. Instead of setting prices, she encourages her customers to pay however much their meal was worth to them.
“[The Lord] just came to me and said I don’t need to do it, I need to let him do it,” Parris said. “The way I could show I was giving God control was to give him control of the cash register.
Even though many scoffed at Parris’s idea, the decision has paid off big time. She says that since she gave God control of her business, Just Cookin’s revenue has tripled.
The move has also allowed the poor to eat for very little, while those with more money have been generous in how much they pay. In the process, Parris has earned herself a group of loyal customers who respect her for her belief in God.
“You stepped out on faith,” patron Roger Self recalled telling Parris. “I’m going to step out on faith, too.”
“I thought that [letting customers choose prices] probably wouldn’t be the recommendation of a business coach,” Self added, “but if the Lord is the coach, then how could she go wrong?”
Parris says that since she made the change, the benefits have been financial as well as spiritual. Her restaurant has a joyful, loving atmosphere as the patrons feel the presence of God as they eat.
“There’s just a happiness and peace around here,” she said.
