Joe Biden’s mouth got him in trouble again this week after he used an anti-semitic slur in a speech on Tuesday.
The Vice-President was speaking at the Legal Services Corporation when he referred to immoral bankers who go after members of the military as “Shylocks.”
Referencing his son, who served in the U.S. military in Iraq, Biden said, ““People would come to him and talk about what was happening to them at home in terms of foreclosures, in terms of bad loans that were being — I mean, these Shylocks who took advantage of these women and men while overseas.”
Jews everywhere were instantly outraged by the use of the slur that has long been a term for a “money-grabbing Jew.” Shylock was a Jewish moneylender who served as a villain in William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice.”
In the play, Shylock famously demands a “pound of flesh” as payment for a loan. After Biden’s speech, the backlash from the Jewish community was swift.
“Shylock represents the medieval stereotype about Jews and remains an offensive characterization to this day,” Anti-Defamation League National Director Abraham Foxman commented. “The Vice President should have been more careful.”
“When someone as friendly to the Jewish community and open and tolerant an individual as is Vice President Joe Biden, uses the term ‘Shylocked’ to describe unscrupulous moneylenders dealing with service men and women, we see once again how deeply embedded this stereotype about Jews is in society.”
This is, of course, not the first time Biden’s mouth has gotten him in trouble. The Vice President has been making a fool of himself ever since Obama became President, so the Jews are just the latest in a long list of groups he’s offended.
What do you think about this? Was Biden’s speech offensive, or are people overreacting? Let us know in the comments below!
