It has been revealed that an unauthorized doctor was present at the final surgery of comedienne Joan Rivers.
According to The New York Times, an ear, nose, and throat specialist was present during the surgery even though she was not authorized to practice medicine at the Yorkville Endoscopy Clinic in Manhattan. The specialist was brought in by Joan’s gastroenterologist, Dr. Lawrence Cohen.
Dr. Cohen reportedly brought in the E.N.T. specialist to check Joan’s vocal cords for abnormalities both before and after he performed the endoscopy. Witness would not reveal the E.N.T specialist’s name, only saying that she was female and was not supposed to be practicing at the clinic.
Sources say that the E.N.T. specialist was originally identified as an observer instead of a doctor. Since she was carrying a small bag with her, witnesses assumed she was a makeup artist employed by Rivers.
Joan reportedly chose to have the operation performed at the Yorkville Endoscopy Clinic because she wanted to avoid the publicity of a hospital, but this turned out to be a mistake when the procedure quickly went very wrong.
After Dr. Cohen performed the endoscopy, both he and the E.N.T specialist noticed that Joan was no longer breathing.
“In the final phase, they noticed her oxygen dropping quickly,” a witness said. “They tried to stabilize her.”
When the doctors were not able to resuscitate her, the 81 year-old comedienne was rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma. She never woke up.
On Thursday night, a spokeswoman for the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic, which opened in 2013, said that they could not reveal any details about Joan’s treatment due to federal law. Despite this, it will be very difficult for the E.N.T specialist to remain hidden forever, especially if Joan’s family decides to sue.
