Comedic legend, Joan Rivers, has been in a medically induced coma since the later part of last week, after a routine vocal cord surgery went horribly wrong, causing her to suffer a stroke. As Rivers’ family dealt with the devastating decision of whether or not to pull the plug on their matriarch, the world prayed that she would make a recovery. Those prayers seem to have been answered, as doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City have begun the process of waking her from her coma. The gradual process was started yesterday and should be complete by Tuesday.
Now, Rivers’ family is considering initiating a lawsuit over the botched medical procedure, which doctors are saying could ultimately render her a ‘vegetable’, or ‘in a wheelchair’. “Shock and upset is turning to anger, and they are looking for someone to blame,” reported a source close to the family. “An 81-year-old should not have that procedure as an outpatient.”
Rivers’ daughter, Melissa, has stated that her mother would not want to go on living if she could not enjoy a “a full and active life”. MailOnline reported that she told a source her mother “would never want to be a burden on anyone”. Indeed, Rivers and her daughter are extremely close and Melissa is certainly the person who knows her best.
Melissa Rivers, 46, and son Cooper, 13, rushed to be by Joan’s bedside. The pair caught a flight out of LAX last Thursday.
There has been an outpouring of support for the Hollywood legend on social media. Melissa Rivers released a statement yesterday, thanking everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers:
“My mother would be so touched by the tributes and prayers that we have received from around the world. Her condition remains serious but she is receiving the best treatment and care possible. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts as we pray for her recovery.”
