Well ladies and gentlemen, the moment so many have been waiting for has finally arrived – Tony Stewart has finally announced he’s coming back. In an announcement made on Thursday afternoon, Stewart-Haas Racing has declared that Stewart will be racing this coming Saturday in Atlanta.
As Mr. Conservative has previously reported, Stewart has backed out of a total of four races (3 NASCAR, 1 dirt track) since he hit and killed fellow driver Kevin Ward Jr a few weeks ago. Having stayed out of the spotlight for so long, waiting for media coverage to die down, many were speculative if he’d ever return and instead announce his retirement.
Although the investigation into the accident is still underway despite the initial two week period having been surpassed, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O’Donnell noted that, “Tony Stewart has received all the necessary clearances required to return to all racing activities and therefore is eligible to compete this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. NASCAR has remained in constant contact with his race team and we will stay very close to this situation as Stewart returns to competition.”
Furthermore, Stewart’s team has announced that they will be holding a press conference at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday at 1 p.m. where Stewart will be in attendance.
