Yesterday the world was thrust into horror as a Muslim terrorist, belonging to the militant group ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), behead an American journalist blaming his death on Obama’s re-intervention in Iraq. At the end of the video, it showed that they also have another American in their custody and they have since announced the imprisonment of one more.
As shown in yesterday’s video, American journalist Steven Sotloff has been announced as the terrorist organization’s next victim, “depends on Obama’s next decision.” Soon facing the same fate as the American who died in the video, James Foley, it appears this horrifying trend may not end anytime soon.
This notion is only further validated as the group has also released that they hold yet another American journalist captive as well – Austin Tice. According to reports, Tice has been captured by ISIS members, but that’s not the whole story.
As described by Syria expert Joseph Holliday, “It’s like a caricature of a jihadi group. It looks like someone went to the Internet, watched pictures of Afghan mujahedeen, then copied them.” Apparently the theory sought to blame Syrian forces for the capture in an effort to blame the rebels and ultimately sway American support away from the Free Syrian Army.
Oddly enough, others have drawn the same independent conclusion when it came to Foley’s case as well. As it turns out the Syrian regime was mostly responsible for the creation of ISIS and the same force that captured at least two of the three Americans.
Journalist Peter Gelling wrote in GlobalPost:
We have obtained multiple independent reports from very credible confidential sources who have both indirect and direct access that confirm our assessment that Jim is now being held by the Syrian government in a prison or detention facility in the Damascus area. We further believe that this facility is under the control of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence service. Based on what we have learned, it is likely Jim is being held with one or more Western journalists, including most likely at least one other American.”
Giving a further heart wrenching look into the matter, Lee Smith of The Weekly Standard writes:
That other American may have been Tice, who sources tell me is likely still alive. What is certain is that Steven Sotloff is in a very dire situation. I know him. He’s a sweet, courageous, and imaginative American. Our paths crossed in several countries across the Middle East, including Lebanon, where his bravery, sympathy and devotion to and interest in the people of the region earned him admiration and won him many friends. During the course of the Arab Spring, he reported from virtually every spot in the Middle East—including Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, and of course Syria. I recommend his stories to anyone who wants to know what that time looked like, and the hell that it turned into—the hell where Steven is now praying for his life. I am praying for it, too.
Now that the full story is out there what do you think – how will Obama react to this news, and what will he do to bring our fellow Americans home?
