The Colt family has become infamous as the worst case of incest the world has ever seen. Australian authorities were alerted to the 40 person clan after one of the family’s children made a startling comment at school. They were found living in squalor, without proper shelter, in New South Whales.
As reported by MailOnline:
Moving state to state, possibly to evade detection, the scandal only came to light because of a schoolyard conversation involving one of the children living in the hills who did attend school.
One of the Colt family children was overheard saying at the school, ‘My sister is pregnant and we don’t know which of my brothers is the father’.
The remark triggered a raid in July 2012, when officers from the NSW Police State Crime Command Child Sexual Abuse Squad and Family and Community Services officers turned up at the block, which lies around 30km out of the town between large established farms and untamed scrub.
They found the 40 adults and children living in two filthy caravans, two sheds and tents on an unsewered block with no plumbing.
Dirt caked the surfaces of stoves and cooking facilities, rotten vegetables lay in a refrigerator and a kangaroo was sleeping on one of the children’s beds.
The children of the family were quickly placed into foster care. Now, matriarch Betty Colt is trying desperately to get her kids back, even breaking the law to do so. Betty attempted to abduct two of her younger children out of foster care with the help of one of her older sons, who has been given the court appointed name “Bobby”. The pair planned to kidnap the younger kids in the dead of night, between the hours of 2am and 4am. Betty faces up to 10 years in jail for the offense.
This woman isn’t going to win any Mother Of The Year awards. She was found sharing a marital bed with her brother, while her children – some as young as 10 – engaged in sexual intercourse with other underage family members, mostly their aunts and uncles.
Australia’s most rural areas are home to some of the world’s most deplorable sexual abuse. This case of incest is proof of such, along with many other instances which include child brides.
A judge will decide Betty’s fate on September 1, and we will be sure to keep you posted when that happens.
