Obama: “We Tortured Some Folks” But We Were Right
August 2, 2014 8:46am PST
After the tragic events that occurred on 9/11 all agencies of the United States were running at full throttle trying to gain intelligence at an extremely quick pace. That being said, amidst the chaos shortly thereafter Obama admits that we, as a nation, did some things that “crossed the line” and would most certainly be detailed as torture.
The announcement came out during a press conference regarding a “Senate report on enhanced interrogation techniques,” according to USA Today. Amongst the conversation, Obama stated, “We did a whole lot of things that were right, but we tortured some folks.”
Americans all know that things were done out of desperation in order to ensure no more attacks were perpetrated, but the question is, does that excuse it? Many people feel strongly that torture is not only what is necessary, but exactly what some of those animals deserve – others couldn’t feel more differently.
According to Obama, “We did some things that were contrary to our values,” but in the end, it was necessary. Furthermore, he urged naysayers not to feel too “sanctimonious in retrospect about the tough job that,” intelligence and law enforcement officer had during the after math of 9/11.
What do you guys think – was the torture following 9/11 justified? Is it ever justified? Feel free to let us know your thoughts on this in the comments below.
