A Detroit man has been arrested after police say he committed one of the most horrific crimes imaginable, shooting a 2-year-old girl at point blank range and then turning his weapon on her father and one other person.
Kamiya French, who was the toddler, died at the scene and her father, 34-year-old Kenneth French, is in stable condition.
The shooter is said to have fired multiple shots at three people who were sitting on the front porch of the Inkster home on Tuesday, according to Lt. Mike Shaw from the Michigan State Police.
The third victim has been identified as 12-year-old Chelsea Lancaster, who was a long-time friend of the French family. She was hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting.
According to eyewitness Andy Anderson, the shooter walked into the yard and opened fire on the toddler first at close-range. After that he turned towards the home and started shooting at the people sitting on the porch.
“He shot the baby,” Anderson said. “I thought, ‘No, he didn’t.’ And then he turned the gun and started shooting on the porch.”
After seeing the shootings, Anderson said that he ducked behind a car to protect himself since he was afraid the shooter was going to kill everyone he saw.
According to Anderson, the gunman got out of a van that had someone else driving, then walked up to the home and committed the horrible act before getting back into the van and leaving.
“He walked down the street casually with a gun in his hand,” Anderson said.
According to Inkster Police Chief Hilton Napoleon, the suspect was apprehended that evening around 10 p.m. Napoleon also believes that the incident was in retaliation to a shooting that happened at a Detroit night club in April that left three people, including the suspect, wounded.
The young girl’s mother, Erica Gross, said that her daughter wanted to celebrate at Chuck E. Cheese’s with all of her cousins, brothers and sisters. She had brought her daughter Kamiya to her father’s home just before heading to work on Tuesday.
“Oh, my heart is broken! My heart is gone. I’m a young mother. Those were the best two years of my life and it’s taken away from me,” she said with tears rolling down her face.
