A Pennsylvania woman has been arrested after she posed as a doctor and gave male truck drivers complete physical examinations in her home.
The Smoking Gun reports that Joann Elizabeth Wingate, 56, advertised her services to truckers who needed their physical exams updated to meet licensing requirements. Earlier this month, Wingate examined a California driver who saw one of her signs at a truck stop.
According to the State Police, Wingate charged the drivers $65 per exam and displayed a falsified medical certificate that contained the information of an actual doctor named Barbara Wingate, who’s a psychiatrist in the Philadelphia region.
Wingate came under suspicion when the driver from California questioned her purported medical credentials after he had issues with the forms she faxed to him. He told California authorities that she performed a thorough exam and even had him provide a urine sample.
Todd Wakefield told investigators that Wingate picked him up in “an old blue Ford Tempo,” and drove him to her “office” inside a residence. Wakefield said that aside from her “office” being inside a residence, Wingate did everything just like a regular doctor would do.
According to a probably cause affidavit, Wingate has given 16 fraudulent physical exams to truck drivers in 2014 alone.
She was arrested Saturday and charged with felony forgery, fraud, and identity theft. She’s being held in jail in lieu $10,000 bond.
