As graduation season comes to a close, Ms. Rhimes gave a commencement speech at her alma mater, Dartmouth University. She had some unusual advice for the school’s most recent graduating class; namely, “Don’t be an asshole”. Rhimes explained:

“And while we are discussing this, let me say a thing. A hashtag is not helping. #yesallwomen #takebackthenight #notallmen #bringbackourgirls #StopPretendingHashtagsAreTheSameAsDoingSomething.

Hashtags are very pretty on twitter. I love them. I will hashtag myself into next week. But a hashtag is not a movement. A hashtag does not make you Dr. King. A hashtag does not change anything. It’s a hashtag. It’s you, sitting on your butt, typing into your computer and then going back to binge watching your favorite show. For me, it’s “Game of Thrones.”

Rhimes is the latest notable person to come forward slamming Michelle Obama’s weak attempt at making a difference, but she certainly was not the first. Everyone from celebrities to soldiers were disgusted with her #BringBackOurGirls campaign, if you can even call it a campaign. It could more accurately be deemed an unflattering selfie.
