Since the secret release of five high-level terror suspects by President Obama without following the law by giving Congress the required 30 days’ notice, many questions have been raised surrounding the shady exchange. People are angry, rightfully so, and even prominent Democrats are speaking out against Obama’s unilateral actions.
So while addressing an audience during a campaign event, Paul Ryan vowed that the House will launch an investigation into the matter.
According to many legal experts, the prisoner exchange was illegal and provided “material support” to the terrorist organization. Such accusations are heavy and the penalties for the crimes severe, and with the numerous other scandals and investigations taking place this may just be the final straw that gets Obama removed from office.
According to Politico:
Rep. Paul Ryan pledged Friday night that House Republicans will investigate President Barack Obama’s deal to secure the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
For now, he said, the Senate is a “graveyard of good ideas” and Republicans must focus on aggressive oversight as their best bet to hold Obama accountable.
“I’m part of the IRS investigation,” Ryan told about 600 people in a ballroom at the Hotel Roanoke. “We’ve got the Benghazi investigation, the Veterans Affairs investigation, and we’re going to do an investigation about this troop transfer with the Taliban. So we’ve got a lot on our plate.”
One thing that is clear is that Obama broke the law with the prisoner exchange. What remains unclear, however, is whether or not an investigation would actually yield any results. While there are top Democrats who are speaking out against Obama and his decision to once again ignore Congress and the law, there are many who are circling the wagons and trying to protect him.
Another question that remains unclear is the amount of “material support” that was given to the Taliban, which will greatly affect the outcome of this ordeal. However an in depth investigation should reveal what we all already know, that Obama’s guilty of aiding the enemy and should be faced with the 10 year prison sentence that’s associated with doing so. Such lawlessness is dangerous to our republic and sets a horrible precedent for future presidents should they decide they’re above the law, as Obama has.
