According to reports, the family of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has received death threats in the wake of the prisoner exchange that the White House orchestrated, giving five high-level terrorists up for the release of Bergdahl.
The FBI is investigating the threats against Bob and Jani Bergdahl from people furious over the exchange. Apparently what’s helping to fuel the anger is Mr. Bergdahl’s use of the Pashto and Arabic languages at the White House press conference announcing his son’s release.
The Berdahls have dropped off the radar since their son’s release, allegedly because of the threats. While officials won’t describe the nature of the threats, they said they take each one seriously and will investigate the severity of them.
“We are working jointly with our state and local partners and taking each threat seriously,” FBI Special Agent William Facer said in an email on Saturday.
Conservative commentators have said that Mr. Bergdahl’s comments in Arabic “thrilled” the Taliban by claiming “the White House for Islam” when he thanked Allah in his statements. Bergdahl said he only spoke Arabic and Pashto because his son’s English was poor after being in captivity for five years.
Bergdahl is accused of deserting his post in 2009 which led to his capture by the Taliban. Multiple sources have also said that while in captivity he converted to Islam and declared Jihad against America in 2010.
