A New York City teacher has found herself in hot water after the student she had been sleeping with for nearly a year went to authorities and told them of their affair.
39-year-old Joy Morsi, who’s married with children, faces multiple charges for having an affair with a student when he was just 16 years old, and may face additional charges since a second student has come forward with similar accusations.
According to the student, who’s now 17, he began talking to the physical education teacher last year when she offered to help him lose weight. It didn’t take long before they were in regular contact with one another at which point Morsi sent him an email and asked if he was a virgin.
Their first encounter was on June 10, 2013, when Morsi led him into a closet at the school and exposed herself to him. According to prosecutors, the pair had many encounters from that point on both on and off school property.
The student only reported their affair after Morsi became jealous of him because he wanted to bring a fellow student to the prom with him.
Marcus Liem, the press secretary for the New York City Department of Education, said that immediately upon hearing of the charges Morsi was taken out of the classroom.
“We find these claims disturbing and reprehensible and she will remain reassigned — far from any student and the school — pending a criminal investigation,” he said.
Morsi ended up being charged with one count each of third degree criminal sex act, third degree rape, and endangering the welfare of a child. As details emerge from the second student’s accusations it’s likely she will face additional charges. If she’s convicted she could face up to four years in prison.
