Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi has been jailed in a Mexican prison for over two months after mistakenly crossing the border with three registered guns in his vehicle. Since he was taken into custody there hasn’t been much talk from the Obama administration about the jailed Marine, even though it’s well known he shouldn’t even be in jail there.
A petition was started on the White House website to demand that Obama work to free Tahmooressi, and now it has reached the 100,000 signature threshold and will require Obama to respond. Think it will happen?
Strangely enough, Obama just completed negotiations with the Taliban, a known terrorist organization, to free a soldier who deserted his unit and took off in Afghanistan. While in captivity the American soldier bashed America and even seemed to sympathize with his captors, not to mention the fact that his disappearance caused the loss of over a dozen other soldier who were hunting for him.
Tahmooressi has done no such thing. In fact, he’s a loyal soldier who suffers from PTSD and has been treated horribly by the prison guards ever since he tried to escape. They apparently stripped him down and chained him to the bed, then beat him so badly his jaw was dislocated, which seems to be far worse treatment than Bergdahl received by his terrorist captors.
Yet Obama won’t touch the Tahmooressi case and nobody in his administration seems to be fighting for him. Kerry went to Nantucket over Memorial Day weekend rather than trying to help the suffering soldier, and Obama just refuses to talk about it.
One has to wonder why it takes a petition to force this administration into acting on behalf of a loyal soldier who was wrongfully jailed. Granted, working to free Tahmooressi wouldn’t have distracted anybody from the VA scandal, as Bergdahl’s release has, but it would be the right thing to do for a soldier who accidentally wound up on the wrong side of the border.
You would think that with this administration’s multiple scandals involving our military that it would be working overtime to do the right thing and save face rather than breaking the law and negotiating with terrorists to free a captured defector.
Then again that would be the American thing to do.
Is Obama doing to right thing by turning his back on Tahmooressi, or should he be doing everything within his power to help him? Let us know with a comment!
