Hookups – or more specifically, one night stands – are often seen as generally not a good idea. You don’t know that person, there’s a risk of STD’s, someone could get pregnant; there are countless things that could go wrong. A new project has risen however in an effort to combat the past demonization of the flagrant interaction.
“The Casual Sex Project,” has brought about a forum in which those who participated in one night stands, or hookups, can speak freely about their experiences. Dr Vrangalova, one of the project’s founders, explains, “Hook-ups are so often presented as black or white, good or bad, but it isn’t this homogenous thing.”
She further noted, “There is such a plethora of activities, feelings, hopes and expectations, partner configurations and behaviors, outcomes, circumstances… I hope this project will help people see these nuances.” The project strives for anyone and everyone who wishes to speak about their experiences feel open to do so, regardless of age, race, sex or occurrence.
“I thought it would be useful for people to have a place to share their stories of hook-ups, in a sort of structured and organized way, and to read about other people’s experiences in this way,” Dr Vrangalova mentioned. She is also currently working on a book that details the lives of those who have slept with individual partners by the 1,000’s and who weren’t in that line of work.
