A Massachusetts Democrat has proposed a bill that would give millions in funding to the Centers for Disease Control so that it can begin researching the root causes of gun-related violence, as if it’s a disease.
Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Carolyn Maloney, both Democrats, introduced bicameral legislation that calls for the CDC to receive $10 million a year for six years starting in 2015 for funding research on gun violence prevention and firearms safety. Their goal is to reverse a 1996 bill that slashed funding for federal gun research from $2.5 million to $100,000 and restore the funding.
However in 2013 Obama signed an executive order that ended the freeze in the wake of the Newtown, Conn shootings. He also included $10 million in his budget proposal that was released in March of this year, however he needs Congress in order to ensure future funding.
Markey said in a statement that “It is time we study the issue of gun violence like the public health crisis it is. If we want to prevent injury and deaths from guns, we need to know what can be done to prevent it.”
“No one should be afraid of more non-partisan, scientific research of this issue – not Democrats, not Republicans, and not the NRA.”
With the manner in which Democrats have politicized everything within the government, how could anybody possibly believe such studies wouldn’t be politicized then used to draft draconian gun legislation? We couldn’t, and that’s exactly what would happen if this type of research started happening again and that’s why the original bill in 1996 was drafted, to keep politics out of these studies.
