A North Carolina man is in serious trouble after he was found living in a 14-year-old girl’s closet that he met online.
The girl’s mother found him in the closet on Friday night but he quickly ran out of the home. However he was in such a hurry to get out of there that he left his wallet and keys behind, making it easy for police to find him.
“I was sorta shocked more than anything. I asked him who he was and he said Jarred Workman and he was 19,” the mother said.
Authorities picked him up shortly after and his first court appearance is Tuesday morning.
According to police, Jarred Workman, 27, developed an online relationship with the girl in early April. After the two talked for a while they met in a park where he sexually assaulted her. On April 27 he moved into her closet and lived there until May 2.
The mother, who asked to not be identified, said that her and her husband had no idea he was living there.
“I’m uncomfortable in my own home. I’m scared. I can’t sleep at night,” said the teenager’s mother.
“During the day he was either in her closet or in her bedroom, and when she would come home from school or on the weekend or whatever, he would come out on evenings,” said Det. Lt. Bill Hamby with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
Workman allegedly had sex with the teen multiple times while he was at the home. He now faces 11 counts of statutory rape and five counts of statutory sexual offense.
As for the mother, she warns other parents to beware of the internet with their children.
“The Internet has just ruined that poor girl. She was just taken advantage of,” she said.
