Imagine finding yourself having spent nearly 20 years in prison and finally having been exonerated of your crimes – think you’d be a little happy? One Chinese man recently did just that, was offered nearly a quarter million dollars as compensation, and, oddly enough, the marriage proposals have been flooding in.
It all started back in 1994 when Wang Benyu went to bed for the night where he and his farming co-worker, Li Yanming shared a room. Upon entering, he had discovered a woman who had been brutally beaten, raped and murdered by his roommate.
Li allegedly threatened Benyu saying that if he spoke to the authorities he would kill him. After Benyu refused, Li broke down crying and begged the man not to tell the police – a plea in which he agreed to.
Unfortunately for Benyu, Li had disposed of the body during the night and got out of town leaving the innocent farmer living in the crime scene when he was discovered by police. He was arrested and just two years later her was sentenced to 20 years in prison – a deal he gladly accepted over the alternative which was the death sentence.
During that time, Benyu’s wife had divorced him and he hadn’t heard from his daughter since. He had accepted his fate, sure he would die in the Chinese prison, until that is, Li was arrested in 2012 and copped to the rape and murder all those years ago.
In 2013, Benyu’s crime was changed from rape and murder to harboring Li, which held a three year sentence. He was released as time served, given almost a quarter million dollars, a house to live in for free and a meal at a nearby restaurant.

As he has found himself an exonerated free man, the marriage proposals have been flooding in. Unfortunately for those women however, Benyu recently conveyed, “I am saddened that it has less to do with me and more with my money. I think I will rather stay single.”
